Magie is the title of a poem by Henri Michaux where the protagonist spent twenty years struggling to put himself into an apple in pursuit of serenity.
Beijing-born, Paris-based musician P. Murk pictures writing an imaginary letter to his friend before fixing himself in an apple. The letter guides its recipient, step by step, to the musician’s room and to his table on which placed the apple, P. Murk’s new humble abode.
You Really Should Come to the House is the latest EP from P. Murk, a lo-fi musician who somewhat distances himself from local music scenes. While still a DIY recording, the new EP (which started off as a soundtrack for an exhibition which never happened) deviate from the musician’s previous efforts, the rhythm-centric art-rock of Luftmensch and the autoharp-driven lo-fi sound of Vernal. Instead, the new EP turns to a more melodic, studied yet highly subdued sound.
A Bachelardian pursuit to the oneiric childhood is present throughout the record. P. Murk tries to (futilely) recall his earliest memories of music, be it from TV, radio or in the street. “A scene that popped into my mind a lot while writing this EP is that of a child sitting alone in a room by dusk listening to the music coming out from the radio placed in front of him. I wanted to write that music.”
Lending a hand to help achieve this dreamlike sound is musician Sijiang Chen, frontwoman of Hiperson, who co-wrote and contributed spoken words to two songs from the record.
Unbounded by musical styles or tools, You Really Should Come to the House is lo-fi in its core yet delicate and subtle on the outside. Push open the door and the clocks will start running backwards.
You Really Should Come to the House,也是他新 EP 的名字。
新 EP 《You Really Should Come to the House》延续了此前的 lo-fi 策略,却转向一种更加注重旋律性的朴素美学。

At points, this reminds me of the bands that defined early chillwave, like Ducktails, Memory Tapes, or Predator Vision; the guitars are similarly reverb-y and chorus-drenched, chords splashing out lazily and slow, swaggers subverted into saunters. However, the Eastern melodic flavor gives this more of an overtly mystical aesthetic, and the instrumentation and compositional elements are far more exotic and interesting. Highly recommended.
